Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden fractured his left kneecap during a game against the Houston Rockets Saturday night at the Rose Garden.

Oden, 21, the first overall selection in the 2007 NBA Draft by the Trail Blazers, underwent surgery on his left patella the following day and he will be shelved for the remainder of the 2009-2010 campaign.

The center position is one of the strongest spots on the Blazers roster.  And if you combine last seasons stats for Joel Pryzbilla and Greg Oden the numbers look pretty good. 13.4 pts, 15.7 rbs, 2.3 bks.  What team wouldn't be happy with that?

"L.A."

If you think about the power forward spot on the Blazers there is only one name that really comes to mind.  LaMarcus Aldridge.  LA.  L-Train.  After three seasons with Portland Aldridge has proven to be one of the best, if not the best young power forwards in the league.  And sometime within the next month or so he will likely be rewarded for his play with a near maximum contract.

Depending on how you look at it there are as many questions about the three position on the Blazer roster as there are at any other position.  And that of course is one reason the Blazers made a run at signing Hedo Turkoglu.

Breaking down the Blazers by position....Part Two

Who is our point guard? And who do we want to be our point guard?  These are two questions that have often been asked about our Portland Trailblazers over the last couple of seasons.  We've had a number of players look to claim that spot over the years, Steve Blake, Sergio Rodriguez, Jerryd Bayless, Petteri Kopponen, to name a few.  And we had another hopeful in Summer League camp in Patty Mills until he went down with an unfortunate foot injury.

The Portland Trailblazers added free agent point guard Andre Miller to their roster this week, which undoubtedly makes them a better team. They now have Andre Miller and Steve Blake as their primary point guard as opposed to last season when they had Steve Blake and Sergio Rodriguez. The Blazers will definitely benefit from Miller's vocality and leadership both on and off the court and Greg Oden will appreciate his lob passes he loves to throw to his streaking posts.

Here's my 2010 Finals prediction:  Cavs vs Blazers.

Here's why:  Obviously, LeBron can carry almost any 4 other people on the planet to the Finals with him (seriously, look at that 2007 Finals roster after LBJ, it's atrocious) but the Cavs are going to have a lot of cap room this summer, with Wally's bloated contract coming off the books, and Ben Wallace's money maybe coming off too.  So, they're probably going to get LeBron a little more help.  Factor in LBJ's improvement as a player (scary) and a couple free agents added, they should be able to get back to the Finals.  Now, Portland is absolutely loaded with young talent.  Who doesn't like this team?  Roy is one of 15 best players in the world, and super clutch.  LaMarcus Aldridge is only getting better, and he can definitely be the 2nd best player on a championship team.  Point Guard play is going to be huge, and if they can get anything at all out of Oden, they're going to be challenging LA.  Travis Outlaw should be starting.  This past season, they were a little young, but they could win 60 games this season and contend.

Between now and Halloween every team will have traded for Shaquille O'Neal.  That's the way the web works.  The game of basketball is nowhere near as important as the delicious trade rumors that litter the net.  Basketball is a granola bar, but the water-cooler rumblings and guy talk, that's the bucket of triple fudge brownie ice cream that everyone thinks about while they're nibbling the dependable, flavorless bar of grains and health.  At some point between the draft and the start of the preseason, Shaq will have been traded for Elton Brand, then maybe Corey Maggette and Andris Biedrins, then one morning after a slow news day the Knicks will swoop in and get "The Big Whatever His New Nickname is Today" for Chris Duhon, a second-rounder and Spike Lee's '88 Jordans with the ketchup stain on the tongue.  And, we'll all eat it up.  Then we'll ask for seconds.  Tis the nature of the off-season.   And I love it.

Steve Blake: 9 games, 197 minutes.

Joel Przybilla: 5 games, 35 minutes.

Michael Ruffin: 19 games, 254 minutes.

That is the total amount of playoff experience we have on the active roster of the Portland Trail Blazers, making Michael Ruffin our most experienced playoff player.  Let’s not forget he’s only played 35 total minutes this season for the Blazers.

It's been almost two years since the mayhem of the 2007 Draft, when the question on everyone in Rip City was Oden? or Durant? The Portland Blazers do not need another young talent, thus getting into the lottery is no priority of ours. Making the playoffs, and hopefully puttin up a little bit of a fight, is for real. The team fell apart last year after that big win streak, when they went 17 of 18 overall only to remember their inexperience- and this year they gotta make the playoffs. no title, just playoffs. in the always tight Western playoff race, how do we get there?

As a portland blazer fan, it is hard for me to want a trade. Trades, especially midseason, can screw a team. shank them to high heavens and back. When we are talking about, sending youth away for a "proven" commodity, we don't know how that youth is gonna ball when he is a big assed man, no longer smooth like babies bottom. Jermaine O'neal for Dale Davis, anyone? That shit is not always a good idea! LaMarcus Aldridge is not an inside beast, but he can jam it with authority and hang time. So I'm glad we apparently got off the Amare band wagon. Amare Stoudemire deserves his props, he can dunk it. He can energize a building. He sometimes wears cool goggles. And he's physically huge.  But he's got more NBA milage. And he's got, potentially future knee complications from his microfracture surgery, the same as Oden, but worse. Longer recovery. Came back and left again. DO we need our two main bigs with bad knees, or at least bigger risks? Aldridge, less Nba Miles, younger, less prone to injury. He may not be the physical specimen, but the dude's only 23. Give him time for those things. He'll end up.. 70 percent the size of stoudemire, but with a better jump shot, and hopefully some defense and motivation! horrah!

I generally hate the best player in the league. I hated MJ before he showed us how awful he is at putting a team together, or making any type of post-player basketball decisions. I hated him when he was torching people on the court. Just like I hated Kobe Bryant through their three peat, then after, for having the biggest ego around and wanting to be a one man show. The guy is still a joke, I think, but I can at least respect the insane-ness of his turn around fadeaways. The dude jumps three or four feet backwards man, I have no idea how he lands back on his feet. But Kobe ain't the best around, I hear he doesn't need to be on his team, with that depth, but he's also 30 and a 10 + year vet. It's simply Lebron's league now. James can dominate an entire game without making one three pointer. He is a guard in Dwight Howard's body. And tonight against the blazers he is gonna roll. But I still don't hate the dude.

Many fans will discuss the heartbreak of Tuesday night's game between the Orlando Magic and Portland Trailblazers.  The eight point lead with a minute and a half left, the offensive rebounds given up in crunch time and the Blazers inability to put the hammer down and prevent their first home loss.  But the biggest concern is the fact that no one felt comfortable with the ball in their hands at the end of the game.

Is it just me or is Joel Przybilla one of the most underrated players in the NBA?

When most fans around the league think of Przybilla, they think a good rebounding, offensively challenged backup center.  But what many people don't realize is that Przybilla is shooting 83% from the field.  Last time I checked, that's not too bad.  Sure he isn't popping 15-foot jumpers, but he knows his role, and if he outside of five feet, he isn't looking for his shot.  Przybilla is great at setting picks and looking for the offensive boards.  He is averaging over 16 rebounds per 48 minutes.  I will take that kind of production from my center any day.

On the road vs the Utah Jazz. A hard nosed veteran team that won 54 games last season and a division title. The Jazz beat us twice in preseason. The NBA 2008-2009 schedule was finally released yesterday, August 6th 2008. The release of the schedule was delayed because of the relocation of the team formally known as the Sonics. The Portland Trail Blazers start the season on October 28th, against Kobe, and the Western Conference champions Los Angeles Lakers.  The home opener is on Halloween night against the mighty San Antonio Spurs. The Blazers schedule doesn’t get much easier for a while.  Seven out of their first nine games are against teams that made the playoffs last year, including the Jazz, the Suns, and the Rockets. To make matters worse, 10 out of their first 14 games are on the road, where the Blazers only won 13 games last year. However after this initial month full of challenges, their schedule does get easier. From November 24th, through January 2nd 12 out of the Blazers 19 games are at home.  The Blazers are on national television 13 times, 8 times on TNT, and 5 on ESPN, including a Christmas Day showdown against Jason Kidd and the Mavericks in Portland.

The Portland Trail Blazers, the only major league franchise is the City of Roses, are simmering.  After seven years of sporadic play, poor teamwork, and more appearances in the Portland police blotter then NBA playoffs, the Blazers and their fans, like Nebraska -era Boss, have found a reason to believe.

Portland did another great job on draft night. Everyone knew coming into the draft that Jerryd Bayless will probably never be a suitable lead guard option in the league so you needed to put him with a guy who can handle and score on his own as well, while having the size and the ability to create for others. Brandon Roy is obviously a great fit there. Bayless may not start this year but the Blazer bench was dynamic at times last year and should be that much more explosive next season...and in two years they'll be ready for the playoffs with Bayless starting alongside Roy, Outlaw, Aldridge and Oden.

There's no question Darius Miles has acted like a fool both on and off the court at various times throughout his abridged career, whether it was that ridiculous, tricked out car of his, his consistent insubordination, or his inability to quit smoking weed for more than 2 seconds at a time. For this, he has no one to blame but himself.

The Blazers are down to one game in this season, and when it is all over I think there is no way fans can be unhappy. A few more wins and we would have gotten a first round playoff series. Lets be honest, this team is not Finals material. Not yet. Tonight's game is proof, though, that it is coming. Finishing five hundred, at the least, is a huge step. Brandon Roy's All-Star performance was another. Getting rid of Miles, for once and all, is proof that this team is looking to the future, and that they are serious. Two years ago it was the Blazers on the receiving end of blowouts. The other teams starters on the bench, with everything after halftime being garbage time. This time it was Josh McRoberts and Sergio Rodriguez getting cheers, Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge on the bench, and the Blazers finishing out their home season with a twenty point victory. If not all these players are back for next season, which is likely, at least they have come a long way in two seasons.

Lakers took the Blazers last night in an up tempo game that had me routing all four quarters.  This being the second straight win for the lakers after two previous losses to two of the NBA's weaker teams, was a needed win for them.  Pau Gasol had 10 points, 6 rebounds, and seven assits in his first game in nearly 3 weeks.   Kobe Bryant scored his first 14 points of 36, in the fourth quarter, which may have led to the Blazers defeat.  Travis Outlaw and martell Webster had 23 points each playing better offensively most of the night.  As with the last three games, Roy was out via his strained right groin.

Say what you will about Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, and the likes of Kevin Garnett. They all garner a whirlwind of MVP talk from various sports writers, bloggers, and around the cooler dwellers, each person claiming "its just their year". That said, as yet another fantastic NBA regular season draws to a close, a new frontrunner has emerged in the MVP race, Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets. Growing up in North Carolina, Paul was an All-American in high school and in 2003 was named Mr. Basketball for the state of North Carolina, averaging 30.8 ppg, 8 apg, 5 rpg, and 6 spg (steals). While posting such jaw dropping numbers he led his West Forsyth High team to a 27-0 record and a state title. Paul then went on to play at the once proud powerhouse of the ACC, Wake Forest in the town he was born, Winston-Salem. There he played nothing short of spectactular winning ACC Freshman of the Year his first year, and was named a consensus First Team All-American his Sophomore, and last year at Wake Forest. All the while that Paul was competing and shining in the spotlight in the ACC, he had an avid competitor for the limelight over at Georgia Tech with Jarrett Jack, currently playing for the Portland Trail Blazers.

Apparently Greg Oden made an appearance at a 24 hour fitness in Tualatin and showcased some of that talent that could belong to the Blazers next season. The incident got a sweet write up on the internet, which of course made its way back to Blazer brass. Coach McMillan let Greg know that playing pick up games with hacks at a gym wasn't part of the prescribed rehab regimen. I agree, as do the many people that commented on Jason Quick's article on Oregonlive. One thing can be said about GO. He is young. He needs help coming around to what his life means now that he is a professional. I heard that when he first moved to town he was fond of throwing big parties. Obviously someone in charge let him know that sitting out a year doesn't mean that you get to party all the time. If GO learns something from this experience, which I'm sure he will, or if he doesn't it will be learned for him, it should be that everything he does from now on will be seen and scrutinized. GO belongs to the Blazers and the city of Portland. If he messes up and doesn't get to play this city will never forgive or forget. On the plus side, at least he wants to play. GO is no DMiles. We should be thankful for that.

With Oden coming next year, giving an inside presence that could be capable of easy baskets in the paint, that problem could be solved.

The month of March has been a continuation of the ups and downs of the months after the 16 game winning streak of January. Friday's game, though not spectacular, was a gutty performance, and a game the Blazers, for reasons of pride alone, could not afford to lose. Brandon Roy taped the hell out of his ankle tonight and James Jones came back after missing a month of bodily healing to drop their rival Lakers. This game was absolutely huge for the young Blazers if they have any hopes of turning this season back around and making a push to the playoffs.

Portland-

King James proved to be the veteran player that this young Portland team needed to see.  A great finish for Cleveland with Lebron James’s reverse layup with less than a second gave Cleveland an 84-83 victory over the Portland Trailblazers on Wednesday night. Portland led by as many as 14 points in the second half, but the Cavaliers closed in as time ran down. James, who had 37 points and 14 rebounds, hit three consecutive 3-pointers to tie it 81 with 2:26 left. Cleveland was coming off Sunday's 98-95 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. James scored 41 points in that game, when the Cavaliers lost forward Anderson Varejao to a left ankle sprain.
