Updated Madness posted on 04/01/2008
Just in case you are wondering, this year has not been my year for March Madness.
Case in point: my roommate, who "randomly" selected all four No. 1 seeds as her Final Four, is beating my oh-so-educated predictions. (I am quite understanably disappointed in the NCAA Tourney performances of Wisconsin and Pittsburgh). Last week she was losing, and now she is ahead with ALL of her Final Four teams in.
Lucky.
True enough, I still have my final two teams left. Unless my best friend is right (and he randomly predicted that Davidson would not only win their first game, but also their second and third, so I have come to trust his judgements much more) North Carolina will in fact beat Kansas and at least I've beat him in one regard. I'm counting on Kevin Love to pull UCLA through to the win. To be honest, that is mainly just a biased judgement because he grew up about fifteen minutes from where I live.

In the spirit of March Madness posted on 03/29/2008
I love the NBA.
But there is just something about college basketball and March. It's... well, magic.
Usually I fill out brackets with my brothers and dad, and have a big family-wide contest that includes a lot of smack talk and glory for someone who succeeds. This year is a litte different. My roommates aren't so into basketball. But, given that--obviously--I am, I made them all fill out brackets. We're throwing a party for whoever wins (granted, someone or another will do the best and so we get a party either way...)
It's entertaining to see how each of us is doing. Unfortunately, I am not winning right now. My one roommate, who initially had San Diego winning the whole tournament ("I spent a really great weekend in San Diego one year! I mean, it was REALLY great.") is ahead of me on her "realistic" bracket. And she's likely to keep doing better as two of my Final Four teams are now out of the picture.

Tribute to the Portland Trail Blazers posted on 03/25/2008
It didn't matter that it was freezing cold in Salt Lake City that day last December. Or that I was the only one wearing red-black-and-white. Or even that my date was wearing a Utah Jazz hat.
We'd won.
I was happy, even besides me winning my year-long bet or my team crushing the opposition. Not just happy because I had bragging rights for the next year. Just, well, happy.
There were only about ten Blazers fans in the Energy Solutions Arena that evening, but we were vocal and we were proud. I even got in a shouting match with a guy three rows back—I think my little victory dance when we hit a three might have rubbed him the wrong way—in which I ended all argument by pointing and yelling "scoreboard." To sum it up: best game of my life.
